Guest Post: Terri Tomlinson Makeup Artist for Texas Living

Hi Friends!  I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to work with our amazing beauty team at Texas Living.  Terri Tomlinson is so calm and kind.  She is a delight to have around and she is so talented.  I asked her to share a little bit of her makeup wisdom here with you!
Please welcome Terri as our guest writer today:

I currently have the opportunity to “key” the beauty department for KTXD’s two new shows “The Texas Daily” and  “Texas Living”. As key it is my responsibility to design all makeup looks for the on-air talent. Since I am not able to be on the show each day, it was also important that I created looks that could be repeated easily.
What I find most intriguing about working in a studio setting besides shooting in High Definition is the balance between lighting and makeup. Studio lighting tends to be bright and very cool, so making the talent look warm and real is challenging. For the ladies on “Texas Living” I focused on products that worked well in HD and had a peach tone to them.
For Kimberly in particular I used a brightening peach-toned primer under the foundation and followed with a peach toned cream in the cheeks. Kimberly has wonderful cheek-bones and I think that playing up this feature allows me to bring that warmth to her face. We keep her lips softer and focus the drama on her eyes. (She likes a little drama around her eyes!)
Hillary has a very warm tone to her skin and hair and so I have kept her colors soft. She wears 2 shades of foundation to shape her face with a pop of color in her cheeks. I used a shimmer and soft contour on her eyes to keep the focus on their color and her amazing eye-lashes.
Working on “The Texas Daily” was interesting as I needed to have makeup looks for the men that they could do and do quickly. Typically they spend about 5 minutes on makeup so I had to be very efficient. Jeff Brady of TTD was very excited about practicing and also really pumped up when I showed him how to “load a puff”. He is charming.
As with all of my makeup looks on HD I finish each face with 2 powders. I utilize a setting powder and a finishing powder. This cuts down on shine and also give the makeup a waterproof wear so it stays fresh and lasts throughout the day.
I have been very pleased with how receptive the talent has been to learning their “looks” and they are doing an exceptional job. The entire crew at KTXD has been wonderful to work with. I can’t wait to be on the other side of the camera with my beauty segment!

What a great idea to use a drawing to show exact placement of the makeup!

    I'll have to remember that.
